Peptic ulcer is considered as one of the common diseases in the world. It is a gastrointestinal pathobiological condition due to imbalance between corrosive and restorative factors. Piper attenuatum (B. Ham.) can cure ulcer as mentioned in the literature survey of traditional Indian system of medicine but not proved scientifically so the aim of the present study was to determine the effect of Piper attenuatum (B. Ham.) on aspirin induced gastric ulcer in rats. The rats were divided into four groups each group having four rats. Group 1: Control group; Group 2: Standard group (Ranitidine 20 mg/kg); Group 3: Extract treated group (Piper attenuatum (B. Ham) 200 mg/kg); Group 4: Extract treated group (Piper attenuatum (B. Ham) 400 mg/kg). Ulcer score, ulcer index, ulcer protection, gastric juice volume, free acidity, total acidity and pH were measured. Ethanolic extract of plant shows significant anti-ulcer activity. There were decrease in ulcer score, ulcer index, gastric juice volume, free acidity and total acidity but increase in pH when compare to control group. Aspirin causes gastric ulcer in rats by generating free radicals but ethanolic extract of plant heal ulcer by inhibition of these free radicals and also decrease in biological parameter expect pH.
